Entertaining is a broad term that describes any activity that provides enjoyment and excitement and holds the attention of an audience. It can be a social event or an art project, but more often than not, is most likely to be one of those occasions or activities that have evolved over thousands of years in particular for the sole purpose of maintaining an audience’s interest. Entertainment is also used to describe the processes by which this entertainment is obtained. Entertainment can take many forms and is intended to attract a crowd or amuse, to provide amusement or diversion, to promote awareness, or to simply pass the time. It is usually considered a part of lifestyle and is integrated into our daily routine. Entertainers rely on several factors when planning their event and some of the most important include the type of entertainment, the location of the event, the budget, and communication between the entertainer and the audience.
The entertainment industry is one of the few industries that experiences constant change, depending on the trends that prevail in the global economy. Trends such as celebrities and fashion are almost constant, changing the way that entertainment is presented and consumed. However, changes in the economics of entertainment are more drastic than these changes, with the entertainment industry either adapting to economic changes or suffering irreparable damage as a result. Trends in the entertainment industry are unpredictable and it is difficult to plan a successful event or to foresee exactly what effect it will have on the audience at an event. Trends in the entertainment industry generally fall into one of two categories. These categories include conventional trends and unconventional trends. Conventional trends are usually identified as the type of entertainment that has been successful for decades and which continues to be a successful source of income for performers and the companies that host their events. Unconventional trends are those that become popular after just a short period of time and which may not have been successful for several years before becoming popular again.
It is difficult to predict whether an entertainer’s act will be a hit one day and then simply a trend the next. This is because the entertainment industry is highly individualistic in its clientele and the type of entertainer who performs at a given event may have little or no interest in continuing to perform at a given event if it is not financially successful. As an example, Queen Victoria refused to sign autographs after seeing the final performance of her final engagements, as she felt her reign was coming to an end and she did not wish to see her old age exposed in public. This type of change and sudden popularity is often caused by the actor or actress suddenly appearing on the big screen and being discovered by the audience. Other types of entertainers, who are relatively unknown to the general public, achieve incredible popularity overnight through the medium of the tabloids.
Some entertainers whose styles transcend this type of entertainment are Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, and David Bowie. Another example is Amitabh Bachan, who achieved worldwide success after creating a movie and a series of concerts and film roles. Pop starlets like Michael Jackson, Madonna, The Obeyan Brothers, and The Nilsons have also had varying degrees of success within the entertainment industry. Successful entertainers like Jodhpuri Sant till date have managed to change the face of entertainment, while simultaneously creating huge fan following.
The entertainment business can be broadly classified into three main parts – music, videos, and films. The music business is made up of recording artists and talent groups such as artists and bands who perform commercially. Video Entertainment includes videos for television, cinema, and video games. Films contain all sorts of media including live action, comedy, drama, horror, martial arts, animated, and so on. And there are still newer forms of entertainment emerging every day.
